Course Description for Geometry:
The course will emphasize the basic concepts of geometry. We live in a three-dimensional world. In order to interpret and make sense of that world, students need both analytical and spatial abilities. Geometry and measurement, which involve notions of shape, size, position, and dimension, are used extensively to describe and understand the world around us. Students use and justify relationships between lines, angles, area and volume formulas, and 2- and 3-dimensional representations. They solve problems and provide proofs about congruence and similarity. Course Description for Applied Math 4:
This course is designed to help students improve algebra skills, geometric concepts, and introduce basic trigonometric functions through the use of graphing calculators. We will also focus on test preparation skills using COMPASS, SAT, ACT and ASVAB materials depending upon the needs of the class. |
Expectations:
1. Treat other people and this room with respect. Be nice and if you drop something, pick it up. Do not write on walls or desks. It is better to be remembered for making a good impression rather than just a name written on walls or furniture! 2. Come to class prepared and be in your seat ready to start when the tardy bell rings. 3. Complete all work to the best of your ability and turn it in on time. Late assignments will result in a 10 point deduction for each day late. 4. If you are out you must take responsibility for finding out what you missed and making up any assignments. At times this might entail coming at lunch or after school because class time is precious and I do not want everyone else waiting while I catch up one student. 5. Please take care of any personal needs before or after class. If emergencies become a habit, then the student will need to meet with me at lunch. 6. Do not talk when I am talking. There will be ample opportunities for you to converse with others. Please do not be a distraction. |
Materials needed:
A 3 ring binder or notebook will be helpful to keep your assignments organized. We also will have handouts and a folder or pocket dividers will help to keep up with those. It is a good way to stay organized. Students will be using a graphing calculator often in class. We will use the TI-83/TI-83 Plus or TI-84/TI-84 Plus in class. Although it is great to have one of these for home, a basic scientific calculator which can be purchased for $12-$15 will suffice. |
